Today, as I’m in the middle of a major overhaul of my Game Shows To Go website (it’s not changed yet – so if you click that link you’ll see the old site), I’m very grateful that in the mid 90’s I learned the basics of HTML – the language that web pages are coded (written) in.

While there are a lot of tools, such as Squarespace.com (this site is hosted on Squarespace), WordPress, DreamWeaver (what I use), FrontPage, and dozens of other programs that help you make websites easily, there is almost always a time that it helps me to know the basics of what the underlying code means.

Don’t get me wrong. I’d have a hell of a time creating a website totally from scratch with only code, but having the base education makes using the more advanced tools easier.

My first website was created for me in 1994 by my good friend Fred Rosenbaum. It was written completely in notepad. I took it over in 1996 and created it in Microsoft Publisher. Check out the WayBack Web Archives of the sites – it’s pretty hilarious. At the time though I was one of the first to have video on my website using “RealVideo” – remember that!

The magic website is due for a major update/upgrade, but we’ll have to take it one step at a time.

Until then… HTML – I salute you and I’m glad when this internet thing started, I had to learn to speak your language. It helps me every day.
